Want to learn everyone’s favorite instrument without them knowing it? Our Philadelphia bass teachers specialize in the instrument that people spend hundreds of dollars to experience at concerts–those powerful bass frequencies that literally move your body. At Rawk U School of Music, we understand that bass guitar is the foundation that holds rock, pop, and modern music together. Our experienced bass instructors in Philadelphia focus on both the rhythmic and melodic aspects that make bass unique–you’ll learn to work hand-in-hand with the drummer while providing the harmonic foundation every song needs. From age 7 to adult, we’ll help you become the essential musician every band needs most.
“Bass produces frequencies that are literally the size of human bodies–that’s why you feel them, not just hear them. Every band needs a bassist, and there are so few bass players compared to guitarists. You have more responsibility because those low notes take up significant space, but also more opportunity to join any band you want.”

Meet your instructor, discuss your musical goals, and experience the power of bass firsthand.
We’ll ask what made you choose bass, what bands inspire you, and what image you have of yourself as a bassist.
Learn to lock in with drum beats–the essential skill that makes bass and drums musical cousins.
Begin learning musical scales, notes, and harmony–the elements that separate bass from pure rhythm instruments.
Bass and drums are musical cousins, both providing rhythmic foundation. The skills transfer easily between instruments, and many bassists benefit from understanding drums.
Some of rock’s most iconic bassists also sing, from Paul McCartney to Geddy Lee. Adding vocals to your bass playing opens up new performance opportunities and musical expression.
We recommend ages 7-8 for most students due to the size and weight of bass guitars. Taller 5-6 year olds who want to learn can sometimes start earlier. We offer smaller scale basses for younger or smaller students. Our Philadelphia bass instructors evaluate each student during their free trial lesson and are certainly open to working with younger students.
Yes, you’ll need a bass to bring to your lessons and practice at home. We recommend checking Facebook Marketplace for affordable options before buying new.
We recommend Fender Precision basses (P-bass) as the “bass of basses.” For children or smaller adults, definitely get a smaller scale bass to ensure proper technique and comfort.
You can learn basic riffs within 2 months, but playing complete songs from beginning to end typically takes 4-5 months of consistent practice and lessons.
Bass focuses on rhythm and low-frequency foundation, requiring both rhythmic precision (like drums) and melodic understanding (scales and harmony). You have fewer strings but much more responsibility for the song’s foundation.
Touch your instrument daily and focus on meeting weekly lesson goals. If you need structure, 25 minutes daily works well, but consistency and goal achievement matter more than strict time requirements.
