At Rawk U School of Music, we believe guitar lessons should get you playing recognizable music within your first month while building the proper technique that will serve you for life. Our experienced guitar teachers in Philadelphia work with students from age 7 to adult, tailoring each lesson to your musical goals and learning style. What started in a spare bedroom 15 years ago has grown into Philadelphia’s most awarded music school. Daniel Cullen founded Rawk U with a simple but powerful mission: to share the excitement about music that gets him “moving and waking up happy every day” with students throughout Philadelphia.
In those early days, Daniel was teaching guitar lessons out of his house, advertising for free online, and building a student base one lesson at a time. Within just a month, word spread so quickly that he had 15-20 students–all adults who found him through his grassroots approach. As demand grew and Daniel moved into a proper studio space, the school evolved to serve both children and adults, but the core philosophy remained the same.
After working at several other music schools in the area, Daniel recognized something was missing in music education. Students were being rushed through material without building proper fundamentals, or they were stuck in rigid classical approaches that didn’t connect with the music they actually wanted to play. Rawk U was born from the desire to create something different–a place where students could learn solid musical foundations while playing the songs they know and love.
At Rawk U, we believe the fastest way to create lasting musical excitement is to get students playing recognizable songs within their first month but we never sacrifice proper technique to get there. We teach real music theory, note reading, and solid fundamentals, but we always circle back to these essentials while students are learning music they’re passionate about.
Unlike larger chains that rush students into 25 song performances before they’re ready, we focus on shorter, high quality showcases where students are truly prepared to shine. We believe in building confident musicians who can perform with skill and stage presence, not just get through a song.
Our biannual concerts and “Grace the Stage” rock band program aren’t just about music they’re about building confidence that carries into every area of life. When students step on stage and successfully share their music with an audience, something transformative happens. They develop leadership skills, overcome anxiety, and gain a sense of achievement that extends far beyond the music room.
All our teachers are active musicians, and many hold music degrees. They bring real world performance experience to every lesson, helping students not just learn songs but understand how to perform them.
We meet every student where they are, whether they’re 7 or 70, complete beginners or returning to music after years away. Each lesson is tailored to individual goals and learning styles.
Our instructors have extensive experience teaching both children and adults, understanding the different approaches needed for various age groups and life stages.
